Bhutan: The Last Shangri-La

Bhutan first opened its borders to travelers’ way back in 1974, the kingdom of Bhutan remains perhaps, the world's most exclusive travel destination ever conceived. A pulsating and living museum where the ancient blends in sync with modern trends per se, this exotic land, well known as the 'land of the thunder dragon' is also said to be 'the last Shangri La' on earth; is situated in the laps of the Eastern Himalayas between India & china and covers an area of 18000 sq miles. This sovereign little kingdom has been mercifully spared from western influences, leaving the country blissfully untouched.

A tourist destination sought after by travelers worldwide, Bhutan is a country that attracts adventure backpackers from all over the planet. This is a country of pristine & natural beauty with untouched and natural landscapes in a league of its own.

The Kingdom of Bhutan has adopted a cautious approach to tourism in order to avoid any negative impact on the country's culture and environment. All tourists, groups or individuals, must travel on a pre-planned all inclusive guided tour through a registered tour operator in Bhutan or their counterparts abroad. The basic rates are fixed by the government.

Bhutan has been recognized as one of the few ecological hotspots in the world. In a world dominated by rapid urbanization, Bhutan stands apart as a tiny, green heaven for nature lovers. Nearly 72% of the country is covered by natural forest.

Protected by mighty Himalayas from the rest of the world and enriched by the fundamental nature of the Drukpa Kagyu School of Buddhism, Bhutan has managed to remain shrouded deeply in a jealously guarded isolation that enhances the preservation of its unique culture. A basic understanding of Bhutan's Buddhism is essential to understanding the Bhutanese.

Each part of Bhutan has its own historical, geographical, cultural, traditional & religious significance. A truly unique and charming land of ancient legends & mystic rites, coupled with colorful festivals, an undiluted culture with warm & friendly people; Bhutan can be a visitors paradise where stunning landscapes and varied fauna & flora with its serene monasteries gives visitors that exceptional feeling that comes with enjoying a vacation that probably happens only once in a lifetime.

Bhutanese architectures found in Dzongs, buildings and houses are very striking. Bhutan is not an ordinary place and has many surprises; a visit to this country can give you a splendid adventurous experience unlikely found anywhere else.

Bhutan is a peaceful country with strong traditional values based on religion, respect for the royal family and care for the environment. A trip to this tiny Himalayan kingdom is considered an experience that must be had once in a lifetime.
