Everest Trekking

Everest Trekking

Trekking in the Everest Region Daring adventures, living on the edge.
Anyone who is aware of the legends – George Everest identifying Mt. Everest as the world’s highest peak in 1852, Mallory’s immortal “Because it’s there, Tenzing and Hillary’s heroic 1953 first ascent and the victories and defeats that have followed – might well want to reach EVEREST BASE CAMP: this is where it all starts from. The launch-pad for Endeavour Bravery & Courage; for such is the stuff that myths are made of. The best views on this trek are from Kalapattar, west of and looking across to the great Khumbu Glacier and ice fall and above to the wind-swept king of all summits Mt. Everest.
The very best views of all however, revealing the total awesomeness of the Everest massif is on the trail via Gokyo-Ri and Cho-La; this indeed is EVEREST IN CLOSE-UP upfront in Elysium, stuff that only dreams are made of.

The areas around Khumbu are commonly known as the Everest Region. It is also the home of the Sherpa people and the mysterious Yeti. This trek comprises not only the Everest Base Camp but also Namche Bazaar, Lukla, Tyangboche and the whole of Solukhumbu, which is nestled in the laps of looming Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world and also the mount Ama Dablam. The trek to Khumbu area is not only famous for trekking and expeditions but also for the Sherpa culture. One can enjoy and learn Sherpa culture very closely by visiting this region. The complete trek starts from Jiri to Lukla. Flying to Lukla is the best option for those with limited time. Most of the flights depend on weather condition. However, helicopter services and chartered flights are also available on request. The Everest Trek is one of the most thrilling adventure treks for excitement-seekers. There are several trekking routes within the Khumbu Region like Kalapatthar, Gokyo Lake, Everest Base Camp and the Syangbochhe trek.

For many backpackers & mountain lovers, their journey to Nepal would not be complete without a glimpse of the highest mountain on Earth. It’s like a mysterious calling for the challenge of discovering the unknown. For some it will be enough to view Everest from the Kathmandu valley rim on a clear day, & for some, it will also be possible to sit in the comforts of a plane for the experience. And there are those who believe in ‘win it all & come back alone’; they settle only for a more intimate meeting with the last earthly rung on the stairway to the heavens. Everest area is the most popular trekking region in Nepal…arguably, the whole world.

The Everest Region is geographically based within Sagamartha National Park established in 1976. It lies some 120 km North East of Kathmandu and covers an area of 1,148 sq. km of the Himalayan ecological zone as recognized by ‘UNESCO’ who listed the Park as a World Heritage Site in 1979. The park includes the upper catchments areas of the Dudh Kosi and Bhote Kosi Rivers. The park is largely composed of rugged terrain and deep gorges within an elevation of 2845m at Monju to the top of the world, Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) at 8,848m above sea level. Other peaks above 6,000m are Lhotse, Cho-Oyu, Thamserku, Nuptse, Amadablam, and Pumori.

The vegetation at lower levels is dominated by silver fir, birch, rhododendron and juniper trees; at around 4500m the forest gives way to Juniper and rhododendron scrub. The park contains a variety of mammals, Himalayan thar, musk deer, the Himalayan red panda and the Himalayan black bear are all native to the park.

The famed Sherpa people, whose lives are interwoven with the teachings of Buddhism, live in the region. The renowned Tengboche and other monasteries are common gathering places to celebrate religious festivals such as Dumje and Mane Rimdu. In addition to Tengboche, Thame, Khumjung and Pangboche are some other famous monasteries that you will come across on your travails in this region.

The trek from Namche to Kala Pathar is very popular. The Gokyo Lake and Chukung valleys also provide spectacular views. The Thame Valley is popular for Sherpa culture while Phortse is famous for viewing wildlife in this rugged region. There are some high passes worth crossing over. However, trekkers would be wise to have a guide and proper equipment for trekking in the ‘Khumbu’ or Everest region. Some of the trails in this region are extremely beautiful, but they can be mean, too.
