Island peak also known by the name of Imja Tse 6,189m among the climbers, takes you on a beautiful journey to the Khumbu region, particularly in the Chhukung Valley 4,730m, where it stands proudly at an elevation of 6189 meters. The 4 days Chhukung Island Peak climbing carries you right above the Chhukung Glacier where it beautifully sits between two incredible mountains recognized by the name of Mt. Lhotse and Mt. Despite of its elevation, it’s still an easy peak for climbing in comparison to other peaks in the Everest Region and is regarded as a non-technical peak for climbing. During the summit, we will be struggling our way through mixed rocks and walls formed of ice but at the end of the day, every struggle will be worth it.

Likewise, the Chhukung Island trekking and climbing can be carried out by joining the adventure with any other trekking venture in the Everest Region which will lead to Chhukung at last. Though the trekking journey is composed of only four days, acclimatization is a must for avoiding any sort of health risks that may occur due to the altitude and climate. Our climbing finally begins after we reach the High Camp situated at an elevation of 5600 meters from the Island Peak Base Camp. We will be following our way with the help of the river basin and find our way through incredible glacial areas. The night before our climb, we will be preparing and settling all the required climbing equipments and conduct the ascent very early in the morning. On this very first day, while reaching to Chhukung; you are requested to meet our guide at Lodge of Chhukung which is on the south corner of the village, on the way up to island Peak itself. Your meeting time with our climbing Guide is estimated at 5:00 PM at this evening. After Introduction; our climbing guide will check your climbing gear and brief your upcoming Island Peak Climbing with us. Remaining time explore yourself and over night at Chhukung.

Today after breakfast, we heads further on to the steep way climbing southern part then turning east to the main line of the valley. Continue short pleasant walking along a streamside leads to the Big –rock and the route to the Amphu Lapcha lies to the southeast from here. A mid difficult cross route through the Imja and Lhotse glacier moraines leads you to a wide valley flanking of Island peak where we will set up our base camp for over night at tented camp.

This morning we packed our camping stuff and we'll head on to the High camp from where we start our climb. As you climb the hill, you will see that the slope narrows and the path enter a steep rock channel nearby where we'll overnight at camp. This is where our guide will fix crampons on your climbing boots and re-check the entire climbing group and personal equipment once again for better safety. If required, you may learn last minute climbing technique with our climbing Sherpa at this stage. If possible, you will be also taken for the ice/rock climbing near by but subject to the availability. Over night at High Camp

Early morning through the rock gully; we start our climb. This is not difficult but there are several short rock steps to climb before you emerge on the right side of the drain. The route follows a ridgeline, which leads to an exhilarating and exposed traverse onto the snout of the summit glacier. You will need to rope up for the glacier as it contains several crevasses but it leads without difficulty, to a 100m/330ft snow and ice slope (40-45 degree) on which the guides will fix a rope. From the top of this slope, 3 rope lengths along a sharp summit ridge lead to the top. You can enjoy with success and brave to get a summit and after some picture taking of scenic view will descend all the way to Chhukung for over night at tea house. Final commence about the trip and after this you will be yourself again for rest of your trekking back to lukla.

Experience Required:

Chhukung Island climb is completed in 4 days so the climber needs have excellent level of physical fitness and experience of Good Mountain walking. The climber needs to overcome all the challenges that may come while climbing the peak. Altitude might vary up to or about 6000 meters so the climber must be able to overcome the acute mountain sickness.

Pre-Trip Meeting:

There will be a meeting at Kathmandu regarding the Chhukung Island climb where the things related with the trip will be discussed thoroughly. The introduction to climbing guide will also be done in this meeting and it is also a chance to know all the details of the peak climbing.

Equipment Check List:

Equipment is one of the important thing while climbing any peak, so we have created some list which may help you in selecting the necessary equipment. You should not keep your trekking bag weight more than twenty kilograms.


For the head protection: Sun hat or scarf - Light balaclava or warm fleece hat - Sunglasses with UV protection.

Lower Body: -

Under Garments - Hiking shorts - Lightweight cotton long pants - Light weight hiking thermal bottoms - Fleece or wool pants – Waterproof trekking trousers -

Feet: - lightweight thin inner socks - Thick, warm wool hiking socks - Hiking boots with spare laces - Camp shoes – Gaiters (optional)

Upper Body:-

As for the upper body’s shirts – Hiking and light weight thermal tops - Fleece jacket or pullover - Fleece Wind-Stopper jacket (optional) - Waterproof shell jacket - Down vest and/or jacket - Base layer shirts - Warm jacket (down)*

Hands: - gloves that are Lightweight - Heavyweight gloves or mittens with a waterproof shell outer.

Basic First Aid Kit: - Antiseptic cream, throat lozenges, diarrhoea treatment (Imodium), altitude (Diamox), painkillers, plasters and blister treatment, insect repellent, and re-hydration salts (Dioralite). Glucose tablets and multi-vitamin tablets are also a good idea.

A typical day:

There will be Sherpa to serve you a tea and coffee at 6:30. He will notify you about your breakfast time and you should pack your bag and get ready after breakfast for your adventurous trip. You will walk for three hours to four hours from the point where you stayed overnight. You will stop at the spot where you will be having lunch and again continue for next two to three hours but only walk for 5 to 8 hours maximum per day. Your dinner will be served at the lodge where you will stay overnight.


We recommend you not to expect a good lodges as lodging option are limited. Our company arranges simple cozy family lodges where you will have a chimney with burning fire and local foods.


Nepal Nomad's booking terms & conditions of joining Island Peak climb from Chhukung includes that you must be fully insured with medical, emergency rescue evacuations including trip cancellation insurance which should cover over 3000m to 6000m.

Altitude Sickness:

Altitude sickness may occur to the one who is not used to higher elevation. Our Itinerary is planned in such a way that the climber have enough acclimatization day to overcome this sickness. The Symptoms that are relate with it are; headaches, nausea, irregular breathing, insomnia and the swelling of fingers and glands. For fast improvement and recovery the only way is to descend at lower altitude as soon as possible if the matters gets worst..


Everyday breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided on the lodge that you will be staying while on the climbing. Farewell dinner, breakfast and reception will be provided in Kathmandu.
