This tour is selected to give a good overview of the religious, historical and cultural significance of the various sites in the Kathmandu Valley.
In the morning, you will be picked up at your hotel in a private car and brought to Kathmandu Durbar Square. Kathmandu Durbar Square is home to almost 60 temples, old royal palace, a museum and a chance to see The Kumari or Living Goddess. The trip to Kathmandu Durbar Square also includes a side visit to the hippie mecca of Freak Street. It was here in the late 60s and early 70s that the hippies flocked to find legal marijuana and spiritual experiences. The hippies and legal marijuana are now gone, but the place now feature interesting little boutique shops and eateries. The next stop is Swayambhunath, otherwise known as the Monkey Temple because of the abundance of rhesus monkeys that call this place home. The temple is up some long stairs on the top of a hill where there is an incredible overlook of the Kathmandu Valley. On top is a large stupa as well as a number of Hindu temples. Here, your guide will explain the unique synergy between Buddhism and Hinduism in Nepal. The trip then moves on to Boudhanath to view the largest Buddhist stupa in Nepal. Boudhanath is also home of the largest community of Tibetans outside of Tibet. Enjoy lunch at a rooftop restaurant (own expense) for a fantastic view of the stupa. The day concludes with a visit to the final UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pashupati. This is the most sacred place for Hindus in Nepal and one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites for Hindus around the world. Your guide will explain the various temples that make up the site. There are also numerous cremation ghats where the faithful's ashes are scattered into the sacred waters of the Bagmati River.
