Nepal Trekking Guide 2026/2027: When to Go and How to Prepare

Nepal trek planner is the tool most trekkers wish they had before booking, since your departure month decides everything else. It sets the weather you walk through, the festivals you may catch, the odds that your flight leaves on time, and the week you should start training. Pick the month first, and the rest of your plan follows.

Nepal’s trekking year has two clear windows. Spring, from March to May, brings warming days and rhododendrons, and autumn, from late September to November, brings the clearest skies of the year. Winter rewards you with quiet trails and sharp views, and the monsoon closes most of the Khumbu to comfortable trekking. Nepal Nomad’s guides to trekking Everest in spring, autumn, and winter cover each season in detail.

Training works backward from the same date. Twelve weeks gives most trekkers enough time to build endurance without rushing, so the count starts three months before you fly. Below, you will find a month-by-month calendar, a count-back table, and a printable 12-week plan for Everest Base Camp, plus notes for high passes and peak climbs.

Table of Contents

The Short Version: Pick Your Month, Then Count Back

  • Choose your month. October is the best single month, April is the spring favorite, and January is the quietest and coldest.
  • Check the flights. Lukla flights run most reliably in October, November, and April, and they falter in the monsoon.
  • Check the festivals. Dashain, Tihar, Mani Rimdu, and Losar bring color, and busy holidays fill transport and lodges.
  • Count back twelve weeks. Start training three months before departure, or four months if you rarely exercise.
  • See a doctor first. A medical check before training protects you on the trail and at altitude.

The Month by Month Calendar for Nepal

The calendar compares weather in the Khumbu, festivals, Lukla flights, crowds, and the best use of each month. Print it, circle your month, and use the rows on either side to find a quieter alternative.

Weather and flight figures describe the Everest region. Festival dates follow lunar calendars, and sources can differ by a day or more, so confirm dates with your agency before you book.

Flight reliability figures are one operator's estimates of flights running on schedule, so treat them as a guide, not a promise. In busy months, Lukla flights often leave from Manthali airport in Ramechhap, a four to five hour drive from Kathmandu.

A few patterns stand out. October and April lead the field for views and flights, though both fill the trail and send flights through Ramechhap. March and November give clear skies with thinner crowds. December to February turn serious cold into quiet, so pack for nights near -20°C. June to August suit rain-shadow regions such as Upper Mustang, not Everest, and cloud hides the peaks you came to see.

Festival dates follow lunar calendars, and sources can differ by a day or more, so confirm dates before you book. Mani Rimdu at Tengboche falls in late October or November, and the Mani Rimdu festival trek is timed for it. Dashain and Tihar also fill buses and flights with Nepali travelers, so book early if your trip overlaps them.

Count Back From Your Flight

Your training clock starts when you pick a date. Twelve weeks equals about three months, and trekkers new to exercise should add four weeks.

Twelve weeks is three months, so start training about three months before your departure. Add four weeks if you rarely exercise today.

Start earlier if you are new to exercise (16 weeks before)

The 12 Week Training Plan for Everest Base Camp

A good plan builds in four phases.

  • Weeks 1 to 4, base: easy cardio three times a week, two bodyweight strength sessions, and one walk of two to three hours
  • Weeks 5 to 8, build: more cardio with hills or stairs, strength with weights, longer hikes, and a light daypack
  • Weeks 9 to 11, peak: back-to-back long hikes on consecutive days, in the boots you will wear in Nepal, with a loaded pack
  • Week 12, taper: cut the volume in half and rest the last two to three days, so you arrive fresh

Print this table and tick off each week. Walk or cycle for cardio, and use squats, lunges, step-ups, calf raises, glute bridges, and planks for strength. Hike in the boots you will wear in Nepal.

See a doctor before you begin, and stop and seek advice if you feel chest pain, dizziness, or unusual breathlessness.

Your Saturday hike matters most, since it builds the endurance you need for five to seven hour days at altitude. Leg strength protects your knees on long descents, and a steady core keeps a pack comfortable. Use trekking poles on your hikes, because you will use them in Nepal.

Training for Your Kind of Trek

  • Everest Base Camp: follow the plan as written. The standard trek rewards steady endurance more than speed, and the short trek asks for the same fitness in fewer days.
  • High passes and the Gokyo valley: add one extra long hike a week from week 5, and practice downhill walking. The Gokyo Lakes trek adds a steep climb to Gokyo Ri.
  • Peak climbing:Island Peak tests your arms and core on the headwall, Mera Peak tests stamina over a long, cold summit day, and Lobuche East adds rock scrambling that rewards grip strength. Add pull-ups, rows, and farmer’s carries twice a week, and consider a short rock-climbing or ropes course.

Best Month for Your Goal

  • Clear views and the classic experience: October
  • Spring colors and the climbing season: April
  • Solitude: January, with serious cold-weather gear
  • Festivals: late October for Dashain and Mani Rimdu, February for Losar
  • A first trek with fewer crowds: March or late November
  • Pilgrimage and culture: mid-August for Janai Purnima

Training When the Weather Fights You

Monsoon rain, winter cold, and a flat city can all disrupt your plan.

  • Rain: stair climbing, treadmill incline walks, and gym cardio replace hills.
  • Cold or dark evenings: short indoor sessions of squats, lunges, and step-ups keep strength work on track.
  • No hills nearby: loop a staircase or a tall building, wear a loaded pack, and add time instead of height.
  • Missed weeks: repeat the week you missed, and never double two weeks into one.

Before You Start

See a doctor before beginning any training plan, especially if you have a heart, lung, or joint condition, since altitude puts extra strain on the body. Stop and seek advice if you feel chest pain, dizziness, or unusual breathlessness, and build up slowly. Training lowers your risk on the mountain, but it does not guarantee you will avoid altitude sickness, so your guide’s checks and a slow pace still matter.

Plan Your Month, Train Your Body, Then Go

Choosing your trekking month and counting back twelve weeks turns a vague dream into a dated plan. Pick the season that suits your goals, mark your training start, and walk a little more each week.
