Island peak climbing adventure is a well planned route with the best acclimatisation designed to detail with awesome Himalayan scenery that literally stirs the emotions, trek to Island Peak via the Everest Base Camp route on a high. This is definitely not the highest trekking peak in Nepal; but the imposing Island Peak at 6,189m/20,305ft provides a great deal of technical ramifications. We have before us an assorted feast of rock scrambling, roped glacier travel, a steep snow/ice wall on fixed ropes, and an exposed summit ridge for an exciting climax that gets the adrenaline pumping on top physical gear. The trip takes-off with a flight from Kathmandu to Hillary’s airstrip at Lukla, before a trek to Dingboche via the Sherpa capital, hustling & bustling Namche Bazaar. You spend two blissful nights in each of these villages, to assist with your acclimatisation and lessen the chances of altitude illness, especially for a trip like this. The two-week hike in is a world class trek in a league of its own. It provides optimum acclimatisation and includes an early morning ascent of Kala Pattar, or alternatively the trek up to Everest Base Camp. At every twist and turn we are rewarded with unforgettable panoramic views of 7,000 and 8,000m Himalayan giants that stand tall reaching to the sky.
As Island Peak is graded Alpine 2B, suitable mountaineering experience is necessary. Island Peak is one of the most popular 6,000m peaks in Nepal. On this 3-week trip you acclimatise gradually whilst trekking up the Khumbu Valley, before climbing a lower mountain, Pokalde and then clambering on to Island Peak. For the climb you have the advantage of using a high camp placed at 5,600m, as well as a spare summit day to provide more flexibility. The ascent begins with a scramble up a rocky gully to a ridge where you put on crampons and rope up for the glacier crossing heading towards the south ridge. The route across the glacier is easy-angled, but it can be crevassed in places. From the bergshrund at the base of the headwall, 100m of snow and ice, as steep as 45° is climbed to arrive on the airy summit ridge. This is followed to the top, where you can enjoy marvelous views of Lhotse Shar, Makalu's west face, the north face of Baruntse and Ama Dablam's north ridge.
After the ascent of Island Peak you retrace your steps back down the main Everest trail to Lukla and fly back to Kathmandu and a truly warm soft bed, spending two nights there before heading back to the green, green grass of home.
